The ongoing water scarcity in Nyakishenyi sub-county has severely disrupted activities at Nyakishenyi Secondary School, according to Head Teacher Ivan Mwongyera. Speaking to our reporter, Mwongyera described the significant challenges faced by students and staff as they grapple with the acute shortage of clean water, which has negatively impacted both academic activities and sanitation.

Mwongyera highlighted that students often have to walk long distances to fetch water, a task that is not only exhausting but also takes away from valuable learning time. The school relies on a single well for clean water, which is shared with many residents of Nangara village. He expressed his concerns about the deteriorating sanitation and personal hygiene standards among students, noting that the available water sources are limited and often contaminated, coming from swampy areas.

Turyahabwe Bernard, Chairperson of Nyamabale Cell, echoed these concerns, stating that many areas in Nyakishenyi are affected by water scarcity. He attributed the issue to the region’s hilly and rugged terrain, which complicates the distribution of water services. Turyahabwe pointed out that only three water sources are serving a large population, which includes institutions such as Nyakishenyi Secondary School, Nangara Primary School, and Mulama Technical Institute, as well as places of worship like Nangara Catholic Church, Kafunjo Catholic Church, and Murama Evangelical Church.

“Many areas face severe challenges due to the terrain, and we urgently need more water sources to serve the community and institutions,” Turyahabwe emphasized.

Twinomujuni Wednesday, Chairperson LC3 of Nyakishenyi sub-county, confirmed the widespread impact of water shortages across the region, which he said affects both domestic and institutional needs. “Almost 15 villages in Nyakishenyi are dealing with daily water scarcity, hindering essential services,” Wednesday explained, underscoring the need for urgent intervention.

The dire situation continues to disrupt the lives of students and residents, prompting calls for sustainable solutions to improve access to clean water in Nyakishenyi.
