Residents of Kishanda 2 in Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri District, have raised concerns about the persistent shortage of electricity in their area.

Amos Kacweera, a resident of the area, told our reporter that the problem has greatly affected their daily lives. He explained that residents have to travel long distances to access services like food processing facilities, such as milling factories, and even basic amenities like barbershops. Kacweera urged the responsible authorities to intervene and provide electricity to their community.

Kacweera also mentioned that during the rainy season, they are often left in darkness since they rely on solar energy, which depends on sunlight and is scarce during this period. He further noted that solar power systems are not affordable for many small-scale earners in the area.

Another resident, Everisto Byarugaba, stated that most parts of Kishanda parish lack electricity, forcing residents to depend on lamps, candles, and, for those who can afford them, solar power. He expressed frustration, saying that they have informed local leaders about the issue numerous times, but no action has been taken.

Godson Mubangizi, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyakagyeme Sub County, addressed residents’ concerns, advising them to remain patient. He explained that the government has a plan to extend electricity to their area. However, the delay is due to the expiration of the contract with the company that was supposed to supply electricity. The government is currently in the process of finding a new company to take over the contract.
