The Territorial Police in Rukungiri District are investigating a serious road accident that turned fatal, claiming the life of a 5-year-old girl identified as Flavian Atwine.
According to the police report, the incident occurred on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at around 8:30 a.m. at Kibarama Cell, Kibarama Parish, Bikurungu Town Council, Rujumbura Sub-county, along the Kihihi road.
It is alleged that a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UGD 314F, ridden by Kanyesigye Isaac, was involved in the crash. The rider was reportedly coming from Rukungiri Town heading towards Kihihi while transporting milk packed in containers placed on the motorcycle.
Police say the motorcyclist hit the child, who was walking along the roadside with her mother on the left shoulder of the road. The child sustained a severe head injury and was rushed to Bikurungu, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The scene was visited, documented, and cleared by a team led by ASP Sabiti Patrick. The body of the deceased was taken to Bikurungu Health Centre III pending postmortem examination. The rider was taken into police custody, while the motorcycle was impounded at the police yard pending inspection.
The primary cause of the accident has been attributed to reckless riding.
Confirming the incident, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, said:
“We registered a serious road accident that turned fatal, involving a motorcycle that knocked a juvenile pedestrian in Bikurungu. The child unfortunately died on arrival at the health facility. The rider is in custody as investigations continue.”
Police have said inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
