Rukungiri District Officials, led by Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, have reached a consensus with farmers evicted from wetlands in Ruhinda Sub County. The agreement involves conducting a transparent and fair demarcation process for wetland restoration.

During a mediation meeting at Ruhinda Sub County headquarters, organized by RDC Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, discussions were held between district authorities and farmers from the Nyambabi, Kabale, and Nyamikabi wetland systems. The participants agreed to reassess the previous demarcation standards to ensure clear and fair boundaries.

Jolly Nankunda Kabaterine, an elderly resident of Burombe Parish, welcomed the meeting and expressed relief. She had previously felt deep frustration over what she perceived as the unfair allocation of demarcation poles.

Ephraim Kabutumbwe, also from Burombe, shared his experiences, emphasizing the negativity of prolonged disagreements and urging farmers to embrace the new consensus rather than resort to legal action.

John Muhaire, another elderly resident from Burombe, highlighted the lack of awareness regarding restoration policies and called on his fellow farmers to cooperate for a smooth restoration process, so they could continue using their land appropriately.

Hellen Kabajungu, the Chairperson of Ruhinda Sub County LC3, commended the government for managing the situation calmly. She acknowledged the initial resistance from farmers but emphasized that the process had been genuine and urged collaboration to ensure a high-quality outcome.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Hajj Masokoyi Wasswa Swalikh cautioned farmers against wasting money and time on legal proceedings, stressing that working collaboratively with leaders would yield better results.

District Police Commander (DPC) Afande Apollo Kyangungu assured the farmers of the importance of cooperation, emphasizing that government policies must be adhered to.

Daniel Busingye, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment overseer for the Western region, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to supporting a successful restoration process.

Rotarian Steven Nsubuga Bewayo expressed his appreciation for the support from Resident Judge Justice Tom Chemutai and Security Minister Hon. Jim Muhwezi. He urged the farmers to seize this opportunity to have fair boundary allocations or risk complications in the future.
