Police in Kisoro District on Monday arrested a 43-year-old man for sabotaging the National Population and Housing Census (NPHC) exercise.

The suspect has been identified as Bahizi Alex, a resident of Kabuga village, Muganza Parish, Chahi Sub-County, Kisoro District. He has been arrested at Kisoro Central Police Station.

Deputy RDC Kisoro, Robert Tukamuhebwa, revealed that Bahizi refused to be enumerated for unclear reasons, stating that he has his own beliefs and religion with his family, which is unlawful within the government census program. He was tipped off by the chairperson LC1 of the same village, leading to his arrest. During interrogation, he disclosed that even those who are still publicly opposing the census will also be dealt with accordingly.

Tukamuhebwa called on religious leaders and other believers not to interfere with government programs like the census exercise, which could lead to misunderstandings with the government. He urged them to adhere to and cooperate with the census for proper planning of the country.

Meanwhile, Kisoro District Communications Officer, Merida Mukeshimana, revealed that a total of 24,350 families across the district have been enumerated in the first three days, indicating progress. She called on the public to cooperate with the enumerators by providing the required information, which will facilitate the delivery of necessary services to the public.
