The Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Bushenyi has remanded former Bushenyi Ishaka municipality aspirant Kanneth Akanduhura Mugooha, 35, to Nyamushekyera Government Prisons. Mugooha was arrested by the police in Bushenyi District on charges of defilement and aiding abortion. Presided over by Her Worship Halima Omar Ahamed, the court ordered Mugooha’s remand until Tuesday, June 19, 2024.

“This court lacks jurisdiction to try you; I am sending you back to Nyamushekyera Prison until 19/06/2024,” stated Ms. Ahamed.

The court heard from the State Attorney, Bushenyi, that Mugooha, a resident of Kyeitembe East Ward, Central Division in Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality, was accused of defiling his maid and aiding abortion.

“It is alleged that in November 2023, while the victim was working as a maid at the accused’s residence in Kyeitembe East Ward, she was coerced into sexual intercourse and later threatened not to disclose the incident,” explained Mr. Patson Buguma, the Bushenyi Senior Resident State Attorney. “The suspect, a former parliamentary aspirant for Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality in Bushenyi District on an independent ticket, allegedly impregnated the victim, Ms. Juliet Atuhaire, 16, after the incident.”

Upon learning of the pregnancy, Mugooha reportedly urged the victim to return home so they could confirm the pregnancy through another test. However, upon her arrival, she was allegedly coerced into aborting the pregnancy.

“The suspect will be returned to prison, and my office is currently preparing committal documents for the High Court. This process is expected to take six months,” Mr. Buguma added.
