The Kabale territorial police recently arrested several suspects for allegedly transporting cattle at night without the necessary documentation, violating regulations. The arrested individuals are: Tumuhimbise Francis, Mwetise Francis, Tugumisirize Edson, Ekyarakole Odua, Ormwikiriza Esau, Musinguzi Innocent, Byomuhwezi John, Tugume Robert, Turyahabwe James, Katungi Moses, Ankankwasa Leo, Plan Alfa, Ngabirano Innocent, Maniraguha Patrick, Tukwantise Gordon, Ayambe Abias, Tumwebaze Alex and Twahibwa Lauben.

On August 20, 2024, at approximately 3:00 AM, in Nyakijumba Cell, Southern Division of Kabale District, the suspects were apprehended based on intelligence information. They were found transporting 38 heads of cattle using four vehicles: a Canter (UAU 737N) carrying 11 cows, an Isuzu Elf (UBA 659) with 5 cows, a Canter (UBD 905Q) carrying 10 cows, and a Diana (UBB 613U) with 12 cows.

Upon interception, the police interviewed the suspects and requested proper movement documentation for the animals. It was discovered that some lacked the necessary documents and did not adhere to the regulations set by Dr. Anyongire Angela, the District Veterinary Officer of Kabale District, which prohibits night movement of cattle.

The police, led by OC Station ASP Akanyijuka Andrew, impounded the cattle, brought them to the station, and charged the suspects for procedural violations. The 38 cattle were exhibited, photographed, and handed over to the District Veterinary Officer, who has housed them at the Kamuganguzi Government Farm. Among the cattle, one was identified as originating from Rwanda and bore a Rwandan tag, raising questions about its provenance. Additionally, the trucks were operating outside the permitted hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The investigation is ongoing, and upon its conclusion, the suspects will be arraigned in court to face appropriate charges.
