Leaders and school authorities have expressed concerns about the poor condition of Omukyongo Annex Primary School, a government-aided institution located in Bucundura Parish, Kashambya Sub-County, Rukiga District.

Bruno Turyasingura, the head teacher of Omukyongo Annex Primary School, has requested urgent intervention from the Ministry of Education, highlighting the dire state in which the school is operating.

Turyasingura noted that the school has an enrollment of over 200 pupils with five teachers, of whom only two are on the government payroll. The remaining three are supported by parents, which is a challenging and unsustainable situation, leading to a high dropout rate before students complete primary seven.

He expressed gratitude to the Patriot League of Uganda Team for their recent visit and the support they provided to the pupils.

Parents, led by Johnson Bihagwa, the village chairperson of Omukajajara Village, Bucundura Parish, have criticized local leaders for neglecting the needs of the residents, accusing them of only visiting the area during election periods. Bihagwa has appealed to the government for support to improve the school and ensure that the community benefits more equitably.

During her maiden visit to the school, Gloria Kamusiime, the Kigezi Sub-Region Youth Representative from the Patriot League of Uganda, found that the school is operating under poor conditions with two dilapidated temporary classrooms, which has negatively impacted the learning environment. She also discovered that these structures were constructed by parents and that the staff’s conditions are inadequate. Additionally, the school is situated in a hard-to-reach area.

In response, Kamusiime and her team donated bars of soap to all pupils and promised to provide full sets of school uniforms and shoes. They also pledged to advocate for further support from relevant government offices.
