The UMEME Rukungiri branch Tuesday painted 3 Zebra crossings along Republic Road Rukungiri Municipality in a bid to improve safety on the roads.
The first crossing was painted near Rukungiri Municipal Council gate, the second one at Total Petrol station, and the third near Centenary Bank.
The Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom who launched the activity cautioned passengers and motorists to always follow road signs to avoid and reduce on-road carnages.
He noted that whereas Zebra crossing is gazetted to give pedestrians liberty to cross the road freely, it requires both road users to use it responsibly.
The Mayor of Rukungiri Municipal Council His worship Charles Makuru revealed that Rukungiri Municipal Council petitioned Uganda National Roads Authority Kabale Branch requesting them to put humps at all Zebra crossings in the municipality to make them visible and reduce over-speeding but they haven’t responded to their request. Makulu cautioned motorists against reckless driving.
The Rukungiri UMEME brunch Supervisor Evanz Mutebi said that they painted the Zebra crossing as part of the activities to celebrate the belated World Day for Safety and Health at Work which was held on 28th April this year.
