A total of 36 pupils from Rukungiri Municipality has been confirmed to represent the municipality in Tororo in the National Primary School Athletic Competitions that are set to take place between 2nd and 15th May 2026.
In the inter-division competition that took place yesterday at Omukagashe Playground, 36 pupils were chosen to represent the municipality, among whom 12 are under fourteen years of age, 12 under twelve years, and another 12 are deaf, to represent the municipality.
Byarugaba Henry, the chairperson of the Primary Schools Sports Committee in Rukungiri Municipality, said that they are hopeful that those chosen are going to represent the municipality well, emphasizing enough training.
At the municipal under-14 athletic competitions, Eastern Division became the best with 260 points, Southern Division became 2nd with 206 points, and Western Division became 3rd with 155 points.
For the under-12 competitions, Eastern Division still became the best with 195 points, Southern Division became 2nd with 138 points, and Western Division became 3rd with 108 points.
Henry hailed the Municipal Education Office for being supportive of sports, noting that the office’s support profoundly fuels the success of sports activities in the municipality.
He, however, said that there is a challenge of insufficient funds to fuel sports activities, noting that children to participate in sports are available, but the challenge of insufficient funds pulls them back.
He urged the government to increase the amount of money meant to support sports activities in schools.
