The trial of Ronnie Okello Ameri, a finance manager at Kisiizi Church of Uganda Hospital in Rukungiri District accused of embezzling 1.2 billion shillings, is set to resume on Monday, February 5, 2024. The Anti-Corruption Court Judge Margaret Tibulya, based in Nakasero, has scheduled the trial after the prosecution confirmed their readiness to present witnesses.
According to the prosecution, Ameri allegedly committed the offense between January 2019 and March 2021 while serving as the hospital’s finance manager. He has denied the charges.
Ameri is facing charges of embezzlement under section 19 of the Anti-Corruption Act, 2009, as amended. If found guilty under this section, he could be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison, fined not exceeding 6.7 million shillings, or both.
Moreover, under section 46 of the same Act, a conviction for embezzlement results in disqualification from holding public office for a period of 10 years.
