President Museveni has ordered an investigation into the delay of opening the Mbarara University of Science and Technology branch at Uganda Martyrs Institute Nyarushanje sub-county in Rukungiri district.
In a letter to the Minister of Education, Mrs. Janet Museveni, dated January 30th, 2024, the President expressed concern over the unfulfilled commitment made years ago.
The pledge to turn Uganda Martyrs Technical Institute Nyarushanje into a Faculty of Science and Technology for Mbarara University was never documented or followed up.
President Museveni acknowledged receiving letters from Minister of Security Jim Muhwezi, Minister of Education and Sports Ms. Ketty Lamaro, and Mugisha Fredrick Kalorero regarding the matter. He directed a forensic investigation to identify the staff on duty during the discussion and uncover the missing records.
The President, who visited Nyarushanje in 1998, 2011, and 2015, emphasized the need for engineering courses at Mbarara University. He designated Uganda Martyrs Technical Institute Nyarushanje as the potential nucleus for this expansion.
The directive comes after a reminder in 2017 from the then Member of Parliament of Rubabo county, Hon Paula Turyahikayo, who wrote to President Museveni, citing the agreement made by the people of Nyarushanje to establish Mbarara University of Science and Technology-Nyarushanje Campus.

Despite assurances of adequate infrastructure and conducive conditions for running technical programs, the pleas of the community were left unanswered.
According to Hon. Paula, the establishment of the Mbarara University of Science and Technology Nyarushanje Campus is expected to benefit Mbarara University, Kabale Diocese, Rukungiri district, the community, the wider region, and the nation.
