Kanungu police have arrested three suspects for allegedly being in possession of government drugs illegally.

The suspects include Musinguzi Alex, 51, an Askari at Kambuga Hospital in Kanungu District; Mwesigwa Milton, also known as Emmanuel, 30, a businessman from Rwashamire East Central Ward, Kajara Town Council in Ntungamo District; and Kabyesiza Esau, 28, a sample transporter and lab technician at Kanungu HUB, residing in Bugongo Cell, Nyakatunguru Ward, Kihihi Town Council, Kanungu District.

The incident unfolded on January 26, 2025, at around 5:00 PM when Lt. Gad Turyamureba, an intelligence officer attached to Bukorwe Battalion, received a tip-off from his team. While on patrol near the Ishasha border, they spotted a boda boda rider attempting to cross into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). However, upon noticing the officers, the rider abandoned his motorcycle and fled.

Suspicious of the circumstances, the officers impounded the motorcycle and transported it to the Ishasha UPDF barracks for further inspection. A search of the cargo revealed government drugs concealed in a polythene bag. The items recovered included five tins of Panadol, one tin of chloramphenicol, and two boxes of Coartem (Lumartem).

Investigations led to the identification of the motorcycle owner, Kyokwijuka George, who disclosed that Musinguzi Alex had hired his motorcycle that day. This revelation led to Musinguzi’s arrest, and he was handed over to Kihihi Police Station along with the recovered exhibits.

As the investigation progressed, two additional suspects, Mwesigwa Milton and Kabyesiza Esau, were apprehended. During the search, Mwesigwa was found in possession of 81 syringes, while Kabyesiza was found with gloves. However, the gloves were not identified as government property.

Statements were recorded, and all exhibits were secured as evidence. The suspects remain in police custody as authorities await the retrieval of the case file from the Resident State Attorney’s office before proceeding to court.
