Kanungu District Local Government has commissioned the extension of the Bwashwa Gravity Flow Water Scheme to Kanoni Village in Bujengwe Parish, Kayonza Sub-county, in a move aimed at improving access to clean and safe water.

The project, which began on November 14, 2025, and was completed on February 14, 2026, was funded by the District Water and Sanitation Grant at a cost of over 154.6 million Ugandan shillings. It is expected to significantly enhance public health and support livelihoods in the area by providing a reliable source of clean water.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the District Water Officer and project supervisor, Eng. Henry Nsamba Best, commended the contractor for completing the work on schedule. He emphasized the importance of proper maintenance, noting that the scheme is designed to serve the community for more than 20 years if well managed. He urged residents to take full responsibility for safeguarding the infrastructure.

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Kanungu District, Dr. Gad Rugaju, also cautioned residents against mismanagement of the facility. He stressed that while the government had fulfilled its role by delivering the project, it is now up to the community to ensure its sustainability for their long-term benefit.

Local residents expressed appreciation for the project, highlighting the challenges they previously faced in accessing clean water. The LC1 Chairperson of Kanoni Village, Justus Kwesiga, and the Headteacher of Katembe Primary School, Mr. Philemon Nuwagaba, noted that the community had long depended on a single water spring, forcing some residents to resort to unsafe water sources such as dams.

The new water scheme is expected to ease the burden of water scarcity and improve sanitation and hygiene standards across the village.
