Residents of Kanungu District have been urged to embrace improved hygiene and sanitation practices, with emphasis on constructing household latrines and practicing proper handwashing to curb disease outbreaks.

The appeal was made by the District Health Officer, Dr. Edwin Birungi Mutahunga, during the celebration of District Water Day held at Katembe Primary School in Kanoni Village, Bujengwe Parish, Kayonza Sub-county.

Dr. Mutahunga revealed that only 24% of households in the district have latrines, noting that the majority of residents still rely on open defecation in bushes. He stressed that every household should prioritize building latrines and consistently wash hands after use to improve public health and sanitation standards.

Kanungu District Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Awuye Abdallah, reaffirmed government commitment to extending essential services to the population. However, he pointed out challenges such as rapid population growth, limited resources, and natural disasters like drought, which he said have slowed service delivery in some parts of the district.

Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Dr. Gad Rugaju, commended the water department for implementing several water projects across the district. He, however, expressed concern over cases of vandalism and urged residents to take responsibility in protecting water infrastructure.

From the Ministry of Water and Environment, Naume Atuhaire highlighted challenges encountered during the implementation of water projects, including damage to taps and pipes by residents. She encouraged communities to contribute small maintenance fees to ensure the sustainability of water facilities.

The Water Day celebrations were held under the theme “Water and Gender,” aimed at promoting equal participation of both men and women in the protection and management of water sources.
