Hon. Naboth Namanya, the legislator for Rubabo County, has called on parents to actively support the schools their children attend in order to improve academic standards in Uganda.
He made this statement on February 3, 2024, during the commissioning of a classroom block at Kakibaya Primary School in Kebisoni Town Council, Rukungiri District.
Namanya revealed that the Ugandan government supports each student with 20,000 shillings per year, which he believes is insufficient to fully support learners. He urged parents to supplement this amount by working together to improve certain aspects of the learning environment.
However, he emphasized the importance of following the proper procedures when collecting money from parents, advising that school authorities should first obtain authorization from the Ministry of Education before doing so.
Regarding the reopening of schools, Hon. Namanya advised parents to choose schools that are not too expensive, noting that some parents sell land to fund their children’s education, even at the primary level. He emphasized that parents should continue to support their schools to improve learning conditions and ensure academic success.
Eng. Nshanire Godfrey, the director of Kinombe Nyaruzinga Construction Company Limited, shared that the project, which cost 121,700,000 shillings, began in December and was completed in just two months. He assured that the company had taken all necessary steps to ensure the work was of high quality.
Rukungiri RDC Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, who attended as the guest of honor, urged parents to take full advantage of government support to schools. He expressed concern about those who, despite receiving aid, fail to utilize the schools. Kakibaya Primary School currently has an enrollment of 150 pupils. Nsubuga also challenged teachers to improve academic performance now that they have adequate classrooms to work with.
Benon Namara, a parent at Kakibaya Primary School, expressed gratitude to the government for its support, noting that their children had previously struggled with inadequate learning facilities due to a lack of classrooms.
The event was also attended by Rukungiri District Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama, District Education Officer Mr. Turyahumura Jackson, District Speaker Mr. James Turyamubona, and many others.
