The Resident District Commissioner of Rukungiri, Steven Nsubunga Bewayo, has issued a stern warning to teachers against consuming alcohol during school hours, cautioning that they will face legal consequences if found in violation.

He delivered this message yesterday while inaugurating a two-classroom building constructed by the government at Omurutooma Primary School in Nyakyishenyi sub-county. Bewayo highlighted that alcoholism among teachers is negatively impacting the academic performance of students, as some teachers neglect their duties in favor of drinking.

He reassured parents in Nyakyishenyi that he would not tolerate such behavior among teachers, emphasizing the need for them to reform or face dismissal. Bewayo urged school committees to closely monitor teachers and promptly report any misconduct to the relevant authorities.

Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Hillary Agaba emphasized that drinking goes against the code of ethics for teachers. He disclosed that his office is finalizing the process of issuing transfer letters to teachers.

Last week, Rukungiri District Chief Administrative Officer Hajji Masokoyi Swalic Waswa announced plans for transfers of both teachers and head teachers who have served for five or more years in their current positions across the district.

Nyakyishenyi Sub-county Chairperson Wednesday Twinomujuni stated that they have been vigilant in monitoring teachers, leading to improvements in academic performance. He called upon district leaders to assign dedicated and responsible teachers to their sub-county to enhance the education sector.

Twinomujuni expressed concern that assigning indifferent teachers affects students, as some fail to arrive at school on time due to alcohol-related issues, resulting in delays in completing the syllabus.

Charles Muhwezi Karukubiro, Chairperson of the School Management Committee at Omurutooma Primary School, lamented the unfortunate situation where some teachers arrive at school late or under the influence of alcohol. He appealed to district authorities for assistance in addressing these challenges in Nyakyishenyi, which have adversely impacted the academic performance of students.
