The Rukungiri Tree Growers and Timber Traders Cooperative Society have received commendations for their efforts in establishing a cooperative that unites tree growers and timber traders in Rukungiri district. These accolades were expressed by Harold Turinawe, the Forest Markets Transformation Manager at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), along with donors from Finland who visited to assess the progress of the cooperative.
Turinawe highlighted the significance of the new machines provided by WWF to the cooperative. These machines, he stated, will exemplify best practices in value addition to forestry resources, aiming to increase value, incomes, and job opportunities for the Rukungiri community. He also announced that the cooperative will soon receive a timber drying machine. Turinawe expressed gratitude to the cooperative members for their hard work, emphasizing their significant strides in development, such as extending electricity to their site while awaiting machine connections for timber processing.
Arthur Twinomujuni, the Senior Forestry Officer of Rukungiri district, extended his thanks to WWF for supporting various tree grower groups. He also acknowledged the Rukungiri district local government for providing land where the cooperative constructed a timber processing facility in western Division Rukungiri municipality. Twinomujuni revealed that they have received wood machinery from WWF, which will enable them to process and export timber meeting international standards.
Gideon Ntungura, Chairperson of the Rukungiri Tree Growers and Timber Traders Cooperative Society, praised WWF Uganda for its support. He urged cooperative members and district officials to mobilize more community members, encouraging them to plant more trees to ensure a steady supply of raw materials once the machines are operational.
The donors from Finland were warmly welcomed by all cooperative members, expressing gratitude for their support in providing machinery to enhance timber processing and value addition.
