Residents of Mitooma District have expressed frustration over the poor condition of the Bagarame–Ryengyerero–Rurehe Bridge, which has severely disrupted economic activities, particularly trade and commerce, and hampered development in the area.

Trasis Rwangiraho, the Ryengyerero LC2 Chairperson, explained in a phone interview with our reporter that the bridge, maintained by the Mitooma District Local Government, was initially poorly constructed. Over time, cracks developed, rendering it impassable.

Rwangiraho further noted that the large water volumes flowing under the bridge complicate its maintenance. He urged the government to prioritize the bridge’s repair to ensure smooth transportation and economic growth.

Tumusiime Dominic Saja, a resident of the area, highlighted the severe impact of the bridge’s condition. He explained that vehicles can no longer use the bridge, leaving it accessible only on foot. This has hindered trade and the transportation of agricultural produce, as well as residents’ ability to access essential services, such as healthcare, in neighboring Rukungiri District.

He also called on the government to expedite the repair process to boost economic activities and improve livelihoods.

Nabaasa Jack, a resident of Bagarame Trading Center in Ryengyerero C Cell, Rwenyerero Parish, confirmed during a phone interview that the bridge is currently under maintenance. However, he noted that it remains impassable due to bad weather conditions. Nabaasa explained that the ongoing rainy season has delayed the transportation and application of murram, essential for the construction process.

Eng. Tumwebaze John Baptist, the Mitooma District Engineer, acknowledged the previous poor state of the bridge but clarified that repairs are underway. He reported that culverts and concrete have already been applied. However, the truck used for construction encountered mechanical issues, further delaying the project.

Tumwebaze assured residents that the vehicle is now under repair and construction will resume next Wednesday, with murram application scheduled as part of the proceedings. He urged residents to remain patient as the district works to complete the repairs.
