Mitooma District police are searching for a 16-year-old juvenile accused of murdering a 55-year-old man in a violent incident that occurred on the night of December 15, 2024.

The tragedy took place in Rutooma Village, Rutooma Parish, Rurehe Sub-County, Mitooma District. Police confirmed receiving a report about the incident at 7:10 a.m. the following morning.

Marcial Tumusiime, spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Police, identified the deceased as Venezio Ariho, a 55-year-old peasant and resident of the same village. The suspect was named as Vincent Twesigye, also a resident of Rutooma Village.

According to Tumusiime, the suspect had been sharpening a knife in the presence of family members on the evening of the incident. Witnesses allege that he declared an intention to harm someone. When the deceased approached him in an attempt to disarm him, the suspect reportedly attacked, fatally slashing his neck. Ariho died on the spot.

Erica Batambiki, the area chairperson who reported the case to police, described the horrifying events. Tumusiime added that the incident sparked outrage among locals. In response, residents destroyed the suspect’s small house and damaged other semi-permanent structures belonging to his family, accusing them of failing to intervene to save the victim.

Police investigations into the case are ongoing, and efforts to apprehend the suspect are underway. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid further acts of retaliation.
