Livestock traders in Rukungiri District have defied quarantine restrictions and resumed market activities by force.
In September 2023, Rukungiri District Veterinary authorities imposed a livestock quarantine due to an anthrax outbreak, which has remained in effect. Traders have raised concerns but to no avail. However, on Monday, 16th December 2024, traders operating in the Kashenyi open market in Bugangari Sub County resumed trading, despite the quarantine.
Dickens Muhwezi, known as Kasuja, a livestock trader, expressed relief for the successful day, highlighting the financial challenges faced by traders.
Julius Tukwasibwe, also known as Matia, from Nyabitete Parish, Bugangari Sub County, voiced frustration with the prolonged quarantine that isolated Rukungiri District. He emphasized the strong demand for livestock during the Christmas season and justified the forceful resumption of the market.
Jacenta Kobukindo, Enid Kikanshemeza, second-hand traders, and Elly of Elly Garage in Kashenyi Trading Center welcomed the return of the livestock market. They reported good sales that helped cover transport costs and provide revenue refunds.
Deus Ahimbisibwe, chairperson of the Rukungiri Mobile Market Traders, expressed dissatisfaction with the police presence at Nyamayenje Market last Wednesday and revealed plans to protest and defy revenue collection if the livestock market is blocked again.
Dr. Johnson Ninsiima, the District Veterinary Officer, clarified that he had reported the recovery from anthrax in the district but is still waiting for ministry authorities to arrive, take samples, test them, and officially declare the quarantine lifted.
