A schools inspector in Ntungamo district has criticized parents for contributing to the moral decline among school-going youths by being too lenient at home and failing to keep up with evolving youth behaviors. He warned that this trend is having a negative impact on schools, communities, and even employers when these students eventually enter the job market.

Mr. Robert Tuzareirwe, the Ntungamo district inspector of schools for Rushenyi County, noted that many parents have adopted a laissez-faire approach to parenting, assuming that schools will be responsible for instilling morals in their children. He described this as a flawed approach, arguing that when parents fail to enforce discipline at home, students perceive schools as restrictive environments. As a result, they carry the same attitudes into job interviews and the workplace, often blaming others for their unemployment.

He made these remarks on Monday during a thanksgiving ceremony at Rwentobo High School following the release of O’Level examination results. The school performed well, with no student registering a fail in any subject.

The head teacher, Mr. Vincent Mubangizi Barugahare, emphasized the strong link between morality and academic performance. He stated that student success is not solely dependent on attending top schools but is largely influenced by the values and discipline instilled in them.

Rwentobo High School is one of the most remote secondary schools in Ntungamo district, located 39 km from the district headquarters along the Ntungamo-Kabale road. Previously supported under the Universal Secondary Education (USE) Public-Private Partnership program, government funding was withdrawn in 2023.

During the event, outstanding students were recognized with various prizes and promised bursaries upon their return to the school.
