NRM local leaders and supporters in Rukungiri have criticized the government for violating the rights of Rt.Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, calling for his immediate release.
They condemned the use of the military court to prosecute political prisoners like Dr. Besigye, arguing that it undermines constitutional justice and disregards Supreme Court rulings.
Albert Rwamugata, the District Councillor representing Buyanja Town Council, expressed his frustration while speaking to a Boona FM reporter. He emphasized that Dr. Besigye was one of the founding members of the NRA and NRM, yet the current government is violating his freedom. Rwamugata strongly opposed Besigye’s imprisonment, labeling it as dictatorial and illegal. He urged the government to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling and either take him to a civilian court or set him free.
Michael Byarugaba, the Western Division District Councillor responsible for production, marketing, and natural resources, also criticized Besigye’s imprisonment. However, he admitted that he has not yet visited him in prison to assess his health condition. Byarugaba called for justice and fairness, stating that releasing Dr. Besigye would bring joy to Ugandans.
Nyakishenyi LC3 Chairperson, Wednesday Twinomujuni, condemned the injustice in Uganda and opposed the illegal imprisonment of Besigye, who is reportedly unwell. He expressed sympathy for Besigye’s family, recognizing him as a hero from the Kigezi region.
Twinomujuni urged senior NRM leaders to step up and advocate for justice and freedom while calling on the government to uphold the Supreme Court’s decision.
Dr. Besigye is set to appear before the High Court on Wednesday to hear the charges against him.
