The territorial police in Rukiga District are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a man in a National Unity Platform (NUP) convoy on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Patrick Ndyamugumya, 35, a resident of Kigara Cell, Kigara Parish, Kamwezi Sub County, Rukiga District.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. along the Rushebeya–Mparo murram road as a convoy of vehicles escorted one of the NUP parliamentary candidates shortly after nomination.

It is alleged that while the supporters were heading to Mparo for the campaign launch, the vehicle in which the deceased was traveling suddenly opened on the left-hand side where he was seated. Ndyamugumya reportedly fell onto the road and was run over by the rear tyres, dying instantly.

Police visited and documented the scene before conveying the body to Mparo Health Centre IV, where a postmortem examination was conducted. The body was later handed over to the family for burial.

The vehicle and its driver are said to be still at large, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said inquiries continue to establish the exact circumstances under which the accident occurred.
