Residents of Nyamirama Sub-county in Kanungu District have raised alarm over an increase in theft cases, citing growing insecurity and persistent losses of property and livestock.

Community members say theft has long been a challenge in the area, but the situation has recently worsened, leaving many residents spending sleepless nights guarding their homes and animals. Livestock such as goats, sheep, and poultry are among the most commonly targeted.

Local leaders report that some suspects have already been identified, with cases of house break-ins and theft of animals recorded in several villages. In one incident, a suspected thief was allegedly found with slaughtered meat hidden in his residence. Despite this, community efforts have so far focused on reconciliation, with village meetings leading to agreements where suspects compensate affected residents.

Residents from Kazindiro Cell in Nyamirama Town Council have also reported increasing cases of coffee theft, alongside the continued stealing of domestic animals. They are now calling on authorities to intensify investigations and bring the culprits to justice.

Local authorities acknowledge the growing concern, noting that theft is not only affecting Nyamirama but is a wider problem across Kanungu District. Leaders have emphasized the need for increased security patrols and stronger cooperation between residents and law enforcement agencies, while warning against taking the law into their own hands.

Authorities have pledged to track down those responsible and ensure they are apprehended to restore security in the area.
