Twenty-four pupils who represented Ntungamo District at the National Kids Athletics and Special Needs Championship held in Tororo Municipality on Sunday, May 3rd, have returned home in triumph after delivering an impressive performance in sprint events.
The young athletes were warmly welcomed at the Ntungamo District Council Hall in a colorful celebration attended by Chief Administrative Officer Kiiza Fedelis, District Education Officer Denis Ntare, LC5 Chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigoba, senior education officials, head teachers, and other district leaders. The event was filled with excitement and pride as the community honored the children for their outstanding achievement.
Among the standout performers was Mary Kamahanga from Kabingo II Primary School, who secured a silver medal in the Under-14 sprint category. Another star, Elijah Ankwatirire of Kitunga Day and Boarding Primary School, won a gold medal, contributing significantly to Ntungamo’s strong performance at the national stage.
Senior Education Officer Mercy Twikirize praised the pupils for their discipline, determination, and exceptional display of talent. She noted that their success reflects the growing strength of sports development in the district and called on schools to continue nurturing both academic and sporting abilities among learners.
District Education Officer Denis Ntare applauded the team for raising the district’s and the nation’s profile, highlighting the importance of continued support from both education officials and parents. He encouraged schools to integrate sports into learning activities, noting that it helps build confidence, discipline, and opportunity for learners.
LC5 Chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigoba also commended the young athletes for making the district proud. He emphasized that their victory demonstrates Ntungamo’s commitment to developing sports talent and sets a strong foundation for future national and international success. He urged the pupils to maintain discipline and integrity, describing them as key values for success in both sports and life.
The LC5 Chairperson further encouraged parents to support their children’s participation in sports, noting that such opportunities can open doors to scholarships, sponsorships, and global exposure.
Chief Administrative Officer Kiiza Fedelis expressed appreciation to the pupils for their dedication and effort at a highly competitive national level. He noted that nurturing young talent plays a vital role in building a strong and competitive society while creating future opportunities for the children.
The team was led by Senior Education Officer Mercy Orikiriza, alongside Mukago Constance, Head Teacher of Iterero Primary School in Kajara, and Turyomunsi Grace, Ntungamo District Sports Coordinator and Head Teacher of Nyakashozi Primary School, who oversaw the successful participation of the district’s 24 representatives at the national competition.
