A fatal road crash in Kanungu District has claimed the life of a motorcycle rider, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 10 May 2026, at around 7:20pm at Katoma along the Kanungu–Kihiihi road.
According to the police, a Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UBQ 599U, white in colour, was being driven by Gaabo Henry, 53, a resident of Kihihi Township, while a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UGA 174J, was ahead of it, both heading in the same direction from Kanungu to Kihiihi.
Police report that the driver of the truck attempted to overtake the motorcycle but ended up knocking it from behind. The rider, identified as Mwetise Apton, 40, a resident of Kanyatama Cell in Southern Division, Kanungu Town Council, died instantly.
“The primary cause of the crash was reckless driving by the driver of the motor vehicle who attempted to overtake without due care, resulting in a rear-end collision,” said ASP Maate Elly, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson.
The scene was visited by police, and the body of the deceased was conveyed to Kanungu Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Both the motor vehicle and the motorcycle were towed to Kihiihi Police Station pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles.
Police say inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
