Rukungiri Municipality legislator, Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, through his community-based organization, Rukobarwomunda for Community Mobilization Development, has initiated support for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Rukungiri Municipality by supplying wheelchairs to those unable to walk.

Loyce Kyogabirwe, a resident of Kafujo Cell, Kanyinya Ward, Southern Division, who has been confined to her house for three years due to birth complications rendering her unable to walk or stand independently, is among the beneficiaries.

Another beneficiary is 31-year-old mechanic Caleb Byabasheija from Karo Cell, Kitimba Ward, Western Division, who sustained injuries after being hit by a car while repairing it at Ageterine garage in Rukungiri Municipality.

Both received modern wheelchairs to aid in their mobility as they continued seeking medical care, expressing gratitude for the support provided by the legislator.

Rutahigwa explained that he chose to assist PWDs as a gesture of upholding their rights, recognizing that many cannot afford wheelchairs on their own, hence providing them brings joy.

Through his community-based organization, Rutahigwa aims to extend support to more PWDs. He evaluates patients as a medical specialist before extending aid based on their needs.

He urged beneficiaries to safeguard the wheelchairs, as they could benefit others in need if they recover from their conditions.

Rukungiri Municipality Councilor representing PWDs, Emmy Turyabagyeyi, and Maya Cell Village Chairperson, Moreen Magara, commended the Rukobarwomunda project for its commitment to assisting PWDs with essential mobility aids.
