Residents of Kaharo Sub-County in Kabale District have raised concerns over a sharp rise in animal thefts, which they say are undermining government efforts to eradicate poverty. The grievances were voiced on January 8, 2025, during an event where Kabale District Woman MP, Hon. Atwakiire Catherine Ndamira, donated piglets to support the community.

Community leaders, including Mbabazi Paison and Christina Bikogwaomuhangi Kazigo, attributed the thefts to idle youth who dropped out of school. These youth reportedly spend their days playing matatu and their nights stealing livestock. The leaders also noted that many of the stolen animals were purchased using funds from the Parish Development Model (PDM) and alleged that some of the culprits are involved in marijuana abuse.

“Most of the animals we’ve worked hard to acquire through PDM funds have been stolen. We are left with no option but to appeal to the government for additional funding to recover from these losses,” Kazigo stated.

Hon. Atwakiire Catherine Ndamira acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and emphasized the need for enhanced community security. She called for the establishment of stronger village security teams to curb the rising criminal activities and protect residents’ property.

District leaders have also recognized the growing problem of livestock theft and pledged to work with local authorities to implement effective solutions.

The donation of piglets by Hon. Ndamira is part of her ongoing initiatives to improve household incomes and alleviate poverty in the region. However, residents expressed concern that such efforts could be derailed unless urgent action is taken to address the thefts.

The situation highlights a broader challenge in Kabale District, where livestock theft has become a significant obstacle to economic empowerment and poverty alleviation.
