Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has urged Ugandans to embrace wetland restoration campaigns to preserve nature and improve their quality of life.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice President of Uganda, who was scheduled to be the guest of honor at the climax of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal Fund (BAAF) 2024, Dr. Baryomunsi emphasized the critical role wetlands play in rainfall formation and called on Ugandans to participate in their restoration. The event aimed to raise funds for constructing a commercial building on Plot 10 along Kabale-Mbarara Road in Kabale Municipality.
However, Dr. Baryomunsi expressed concern over the eviction of people from wetlands without providing them with alternative livelihoods, calling such actions unfair and counterproductive.
Dr. Baryomunsi also commended the Church for its role in poverty eradication, noting that the BAAF initiative has supported numerous developmental projects in the Kigezi region.
During the sermon, Rev. Fr. Kiiza, the parish priest of Nyamwegabira Parish, praised Bishop Callist Rubaramira for his visionary leadership, stating that BAAF projects will continue to drive development for generations.
Hon. Catherine Atwakiire Ndamira, the Kabale Woman MP, raised concerns about the high levels of poverty and urged Ugandans to prioritize development-focused activities and minimize unnecessary expenses. She applauded Kabale Diocese for its instrumental role in fostering development across districts.
Hon. Henry Musasizi, the State Minister for Finance and General Duties, encouraged the congregation to take advantage of government poverty eradication programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga. He highlighted that these programs offer affordable financing for developmental projects. He further reassured the attendees that President Museveni is committed to ensuring Ugandans have access to essential services, including electricity and healthcare.
Bishop Callist Rubaramira expressed gratitude to Kabale Diocese Christians for their unwavering support during the campaign. He announced that the construction project would commence soon. He further revealed that in 2025, the BAAF initiative will be decentralized to parish levels to empower parishes to complete their own projects.
