The failure to complete public projects initiated by former Rubanda West MP Eng. Denis Sabiiti has left Nyamatembe Ward in Kacereere Town Council struggling with electricity scarcity, hindering economic development in the area.
According to reports from local leaders and residents, despite the presence of wired electric poles, the area remains without a transformer to complete electricity distribution. This has forced residents to voice their concerns daily, as the lack of power limits business opportunities.
Nyamatembe Cell LC1 Chairperson, Mr. Mbabazi Jeffrey, told Boona FM that while Eng. Denis Sabiiti lobbied for and secured electric poles during his tenure in Parliament, the project stalled after he lost the 2021 general elections. He noted that roads and electricity projects initiated by Sabiiti were abandoned by the new leadership, leaving residents disappointed.
Jeffrey further stated that current leaders boycotted the projects, viewing them as Sabiiti’s personal initiatives rather than community-driven developments. However, he expressed hope in the newly elected MP, Hon. Bruce Baraba Kabaasa, who has promised to follow up on these projects, particularly the completion of electricity distribution.
Bugandaro Cell LC1 Chairperson, Mr. Kajura Moses, also raised concerns about the electricity scarcity, which has hindered various economic activities. He explained that residents struggle to access essential services such as welding, salons, and sorghum grinding. He criticized the current leaders for failing to provide solutions and urged the government to address the issue urgently.
Meanwhile, Kacereere Town Council Mayor, Mr. Mugambagye Eliab, expressed frustration with the negligence of current leaders, accusing them of failing to lobby for development projects. He criticized their lack of engagement, stating that they only gather at parties and burials instead of working to improve public services.
Mayor Mugambagye acknowledged that former MP Eng. Denis Sabiiti had personally lobbied for various projects that were not officially recognized by the government or district leaders. As a result, these projects were abandoned after his departure from Parliament due to a lack of coordination and capacity among the new leadership.
Residents now hope that Hon. Bruce Baraba Kabaasa will fulfill his promise to revive and complete these long-awaited electricity projects.
