Residents of Bwambara Subcounty in Rukungiri District are raising concerns over the worsening condition of the Bikurungu-Rwenshama road.
It is said that this road was previously under the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), but after its transfer to the Ministry of Works, its maintenance has been neglected, leaving residents to suffer the consequences.
Speaking to our reporter, Bitress Busingye, Chairperson LC1 Bwambara Trading Centre, said those responsible for maintaining the road only worked up to Bikurungu, leaving the section to Rwenshama in a deteriorating state. She noted that this has made transportation of goods extremely difficult.
She further explained that heavy rains have washed away parts of the road due to its sandy nature and lack of stones to reinforce it. This has affected access to essential services such as healthcare and businesses, making it difficult for residents to reach Rukungiri town and other trading centers. She called on the government to intervene and provide proper services to the community.
Bagorogoza John, Defense Secretary of Bwambara Trading Centre, also expressed frustration over the poor state of the road, saying it has become a challenge for both car owners and boda boda riders. He pointed out that this has slowed down services in the area.
He emphasized that the heavy rains have worsened the road’s condition and noted that it was last worked on four years ago.
Guard Ntaro, a resident of Bwambara Trading Centre, confirmed that the road is in a poor state, with numerous potholes, especially after heavy rains. He noted that boda boda riders are forced to use only one side of the road, putting their lives at risk.
Mugisha Batilimayo, Chairperson LC2 Bwambara Trading Centre, also highlighted the urgent need for government intervention, stating that Rwenshama is a key business hub where traders transport fish for sale in major towns. He added that the poor road conditions have significantly slowed down business activities.
However, speaking to our reporter, Julius Bagyira, the Rukungiri District Engineer, explained that the transition of UNRA’s responsibilities to the Ministry of Works has delayed road maintenance. He assured residents that discussions are ongoing and that the ministry will soon release funds for national road repairs. He also confirmed that in case of an emergency, responsible authorities would be contacted to address the situation.
