The persistent electricity scarcity in Ngoma Sub-county, Ntungamo District, has severely hindered economic growth and development, affecting various economic activities and essential services in the area.

Sam Bamwiine, the LC2 Chairperson of Mugyera Parish, Ngoma Sub-county, told our reporter that the lack of electricity has discouraged businesses such as welding, grain milling, and salons, as well as domestic power use. He also highlighted a troubling incident where areas that initially had electricity woke up to find the wires missing.

Fred Kivengyere, a resident of Rwemondo Cell, Kashenyi Parish, owns four milk machines. He expressed frustration with the reliance on generators and solar systems, which are expensive to purchase and maintain. According to Fred, electricity scarcity has increased poverty and financial losses, particularly among entrepreneurs running salons and welding businesses.

Fred also recounted that after the 2021 national elections, a political leader who had funded an electricity extension project in the area reportedly lost the elections. It is suspected that the same leader may have been behind the theft of the electric wires. He added that institutions like banks, medical centers, churches, and schools are struggling due to the lack of electricity.

Turyahabwe Benson, LC1 Chairperson of Kakura Cell, Kizinga Parish, stated that the longstanding electricity scarcity has resulted in stagnation and low levels of development. He emphasized that electricity is crucial for supporting various economic activities and services essential for growth.

Turyahabwe further explained that residents are forced to travel long distances to access electricity-dependent services such as welding, cereal milling, and photocopying in Rubaare. He urged the government to address their concerns by extending electricity to the area to boost economic growth and development.

Nyesiga Albert, the LC3 Chairperson of Ngoma Sub-county, explained that the Rural Electrification Program had previously extended electricity to Rwentonbo, Kizinga, and Kashenyi Parishes. However, the wires were later stolen by unidentified individuals, leaving the community without power.

Albert assured residents that the matter was reported to the police and raised with Ntungamo District Woman MP Naome Kabasharira, who has promised to resolve the issue in the 2025 financial year. He urged residents to remain patient as efforts to address the challenge are underway.
