Residents of Bwanga Parish, Nyarushanje Subcounty, Rukungiri District have expressed dissatisfaction over delayed help from the government after they were hit by snowstorms.
It is reported they haven’t received any help from the government since 16/09/2025, when they were hit by snowstorms and heavy rains that washed away their crops. Animals, including goats and hens, were also killed during the evening hours of the same day due to the heavy rains.
Speaking to our reporter, Alex Tumwesigye, Speaker of Nyarushanje Subcounty and a resident of Shenga Cell, revealed that they were left stranded after being hit by the snowstorms which destroyed their crops, including beans, banana plantations, sweet potatoes, cassava, and many others.
He called upon leaders in Rukungiri District to submit the names of those affected to the Ministry of Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees in Uganda for help, as people are totally stranded.
Mutebi Shumbusha, NRM flag bearer for Bwanga Parish, and Dinah Tumuhaise, a resident of Nyandiri Cell, also confirmed to our reporter that they lost everything, especially beans and banana plantations, saying they are stranded and fearful of the months ahead with looming hunger and poverty.
They further highlighted that it will be hard to get school fees for their children, as these plantations had been a source of income for many to educate their children. They called upon those responsible to provide relief.
However, speaking to the Chairperson LC3 Nyarushanje Subcounty, Micheal Musiime acknowledged the disaster, saying he took the initiative to talk to the district leadership, who promised him they would assess the affected families and carry out surveys. He added that he is going to follow up to know how far the matter has been handled.
