Residents of Rweshama parish in Bwambara sub-county Rukungiri district have embarked on channeling river Nchwera in its original direction.
According to locals, during the rainy season, the river always leaves its original direction and meanders towards their homes in Rwenshama town ending up destroying their properties and putting people’s lives at risk.
Keneth Niwagaba the local council 2 chairperson Rweshama parish Bwambara sub-county says that most of the water in River Nchwera comes from parts of Kiyanga and Bitereko sub-counties in Mitooma district pouring its waters into Lake Edward.
He says residents have resorted to doing communal work to solve the issue where Rukungiri members of parliament and well-wishers have contributed towards purchasing spades, and hoes among other materials which are helping them to direct the river to its original direction.
Chris Kagayano the Bwambara sub-county chairperson says if this river is channeled, it will help residents to live with no fear because during rainy season water destroy their houses, and roads hence increasing waterborne diseases due to stagnant water around Rwenshama town.
He called upon residents in Bwambara to embrace communal work in their areas as they wait for government intervention.
