Councilors in Ntungamo District were urged to embrace humanity, forgiveness, and reconciliation as the district council concluded its five-year term of office and approved the budget for the 2026/2027 financial year.

The call was made on Thursday during the final council session of the 2021–2026 term, where leaders were encouraged to remain good ambassadors in the different fields they will join after leaving office.

In his farewell remarks, the outgoing District Speaker, Nicholas Twikirize Mugyenyi, who represented Kitwe Town Council as the LC5 councilor, thanked fellow councilors for entrusting him with the leadership position over the past five years. Twikirize previously served as District Youth Councilor from 2016 to 2021 and District Youth Chairperson from 2011 to 2015.

He asked members for forgiveness wherever he may have gone wrong during his leadership and appealed to them to maintain unity and togetherness even after leaving council.

Twikirize noted that although many experienced councilors failed to return to the district council, they should continue guiding and advising the newly elected leaders to ensure continuity in service delivery. He also encouraged former councilors to support one another with opportunities in their new fields of work and life.

The outgoing speaker further advised incoming district councilors to avoid unnecessary fights over top leadership positions, saying such conflicts could disrupt service delivery and hinder the district’s progress.

To the outgoing leaders, he urged them to invest in income-generating projects that can improve their livelihoods and keep them productive after stepping out of active politics.

Twikirize exits leadership together with several influential and long-serving councilors who have played key roles in the district for more than two terms. These include Johnson Bazirake, who served as Nyabihoko Sub-county district councilor for five years; Elijah Atuhaire, who served as District Speaker, Secretary for Finance and Planning, and district councilor for Rugarama North Sub-county since the creation of the district; Naboth Mpirirwe, the Ntungamo Sub-county LC5 councilor for the past 10 years; Denis Muhumuza alias Gen. Savimbi, who represented Itojo Sub-county for 15 years; and Hon. Ketty Kapasi, the Female Councilor for Older Persons and one of the district founders.

The outgoing council leaves office after serving during the 2021–2026 term, with several new leaders expected to take over responsibilities in the next council.
