Residents in Buhunga Sub-county have raised concerns over the lack of electricity in most parts of the area, noting that the extension of power has stalled for many years.

During a political rally for Hon. Mary Paula Kebirungi Turyahikayo, the NRM flag bearer for the Rukungiri Woman MP seat, and Mr. Andrewson Katebire, the NRM LC5 chairperson flag bearer, residents expressed disappointment that electric poles installed in Ikuniro seven years ago have remained unused while people continue to live in darkness.

They lamented that the situation is contributing to unemployment, as many residents would be using electricity for income-generating activities such as welding, salons, grain milling, and other services. They called upon Hon. Mary Paula and Mr. Katebire to intervene.

Jackson Babweyaka, a resident of Ikuniro, said their area has potential for development, but the lack of electricity continues to hold them back. He urged Hon. Paula and Mr. Katebire to help them.

Tumusiime Dan, another resident, also lamented that the electricity delay is contributing to unemployment and limiting access to electricity-dependent services. He added that residents are grappling with rampant water scarcity and poor roads.

In response, Mr. Andrewson Katebire Charles, the former Rukungiri District Chairperson, under whose leadership the electric poles were brought to Ikuniro, said that if he had not been removed from office in 2021, he had planned to use the poles at Ikuniro playground to distribute electricity across most parts of the sub-county. He assured the electorate that he will ensure the project is completed.

He added that he will also work towards addressing water scarcity, poor roads, and other challenges.
