In a bid to support the construction of St. Francis Katonya Catholic Centre in Nyakishenyi Parish, Kabale Diocese, Brig. Gen. Besigye Bekunda has donated 50 bags of cement to accelerate the church’s expansion.
The donation was handed over on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at St. Francis Katonya Catholic Centre.
According to Gen. Besigye, his contribution is part of a broader effort to expand the church, which has become too small to accommodate the growing number of Christians. He recalled his early years of worship at the same church, emphasizing that it played a significant role in shaping his life. Now, he feels it is his turn to give back and support its expansion so that others can also benefit from it.
Gen. Besigye also noted that his donation was a way of expressing gratitude to God for his life and well-being. Additionally, he pledged continued support towards the church’s construction until its completion.
Fr. Ambrose Mugisha Kayogooza, the Parish Priest of Nyakishenyi, who led the Mass, expressed deep gratitude for Gen. Besigye’s generosity. He urged other members of the community to follow his example and contribute towards the completion of the church.
He further commended Gen. Besigye’s commitment to supporting church-related projects, citing his previous contribution to Katonya Primary School, where he funded the construction of a head teacher’s house worth 50 million shillings. Fr. Ambrose emphasized that such contributions not only improve places of worship but also strengthen the relationship between Christians and the church.
He called upon other well-wishers and leaders to support the ongoing construction of St. Francis Katonya Catholic Centre, which remains unfinished.
Ngabirano Alikanjero Mpazi, the Chairperson of St. Francis Katonya Catholic Centre, also praised Gen. Besigye for his unwavering support towards both the church and their school.
He described Gen. Besigye as a person deeply committed to the well-being of Ugandans, not just through his military service but also by sponsoring students and providing scholastic materials to those in need.
Mpazi encouraged him to maintain his generous spirit and urged others to emulate his example by supporting the church’s construction. He noted that the estimated budget to complete the church stands at 700 million shillings.
