The Minister of Local Government Raphael Magyezi, has ordered for fresh allocation of lockups and stalls of Kabale new central market.
Magyezi has been in the district meeting with disgruntled vendors.
Magyezi instituted the committee in January 2023 following an outcry by some vendors against the municipal authorities led by the Mayor, Emmanuel Sentaro Byamigisha, and Prossy Tuhiriirwe, the Assistant Program Officer in Charge of Community Development in the Ministry of Local Government of bungling up the relocation exercise.
The vendors said the municipal leaders had allegedly received bribes ranging from shillings 02-50 million to sell stalls and lockups to unknown people, civil servants, and their relatives.
Reading the report Sunday evening before vendors and Kabale district and municipality authorities, Mr. Magyezi said that it was established that there was gross corruption based on extortion and bribery during the allocation exercise.
Vendors also cried to the Minister that the market was poorly zoned.
Magyezi said that the fresh registration will be conducted before August 15, 2023. He also said that the relocation committee will be chaired by himself since Kabale municipality leaders are being accused of messing up the first exercise.
The Central Division LC3 Chairman Sam Arineitwe, Rev.Canon Jack Katarishangwa, and Annet Kabagambe all welcomed the directive with hopes that transparency will this time be prevailed.
Katarishangwa said that once transparency is observed, they may withdraw the court case they had filed against the Municipality.
The Kabale Municipality Mayor, Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha however strongly refuted all the corruption accusations surrounding him describing them as false.
