Police in Rukungiri have launched an investigation into the deaths of two individuals in Muyanje village, Kyabahanga parish, Bwambara sub-county, Rukungiri district, following a brawl at a local bar.
According to Caleb Tumwekwasize, the LC1 chairperson of Muyanje village, the deceased have been identified as Habaasa Kato, in his 40s, and Nelson, in his 20s, who was suspected of theft and was residing at Mzee Jackson Tibemanya’s residence in the same area.
Tumwekwasize stated that the altercation began on Tuesday evening around 7:30 pm at Omukamahembe trading center, escalating into a physical confrontation where Kato Habaasa collapsed and died instantly, while Nelson sustained head injuries and was later pronounced dead after being rushed to Bwambara Health Centre III for treatment.
Tumwekwasize urged the youth in Bwambara sub-county to refrain from substance abuse, including excessive alcohol consumption, which could lead to violent incidents like the one resulting in the deaths.
Chris Kagayano, the Bwambara sub-county chairperson, echoed this sentiment, urging the youth to invest their time in constructive activities rather than engaging in harmful behaviors like alcoholism and drug abuse, which often contribute to criminal activities.
Kagayano also noted that Nelson, a suspected coffee thief recently released from police custody, might have been motivated to harm Habaasa Kato due to suspicions that Kato had reported him to the authorities for his alleged involvement in coffee theft.
At the time of reporting, the Rukungiri police was en route to Bwambara sub-county to conduct further investigations into the incident.
