Deputy Mayor Turyahabwe Benard of Rukungiri municipality issued a stern warning to truck drivers who are collecting sand from roadsides, cautioning them to cease the practice or face legal repercussions.
In an interview with our reporter, Benard disclosed the municipality’s efforts in renovating poorly maintained roads but highlighted the challenge of limited machinery hindering their progress.
He explained that with only one machine, which is also in poor mechanical condition, it’s difficult to complete the renovation of all roads within the municipality. Benard appealed to the central government for additional machinery to expedite road renovations.
Regarding the enforcement of penalties, Benard mentioned that while in the past a fine of 100,000 shillings was imposed on sand collectors, this practice has been discontinued. Instead, individuals caught collecting sand will now be subject to legal proceedings due to the detrimental impact on road durability post-renovation.
Benard also addressed the issue of rising theft within the municipality, indicating that residents have formed patrol groups to enhance local security. He emphasized that such thefts undermine government initiatives like the Parish Development Model and Emyooga, where stolen resources meant for farming projects result in setbacks for community development.
In a direct message to thieves, Benard warned of the consequences, stressing that if apprehended by residents, they would bear full responsibility for their actions.
