A group of 115 pilgrims from North Kigezi diocese embarked on their journey from Rukungiri to Namugongo on Thursday, May 17th, 2024, in preparation for the Martyrs Day celebrations on June 3rd.
Rev. Edison Ampaire, the North Kigezi Diocesan Missions Coordinator, shared that the pilgrims plan to spend 14 days traveling to Namugongo. They will make their first stop in Rwashamaire Town Council in Ntungamo district and are expected to arrive at Namugongo by May 30th.
This year, there are more female pilgrims compared to males, although there has been an increase in the number of male participants compared to last year. Rev. Ampaire mentioned that all pilgrims underwent the census exercise in their villages before the journey. They were counted based on evidence provided by their respective LC 1 chairpersons before setting off.
Among the pilgrims is 84-year-old Benon Tumwesigye, who is making his fifth pilgrimage to Namugongo, and the youngest participants are a 16-year-old boy and girl.
Rev. Edson Ampaire cautioned the public about con men who may attempt to deceive individuals by posing as pilgrim organizers seeking assistance.
Jackson Ahimbisibwe, the leader of the North Kigezi pilgrims, expressed optimism that this pilgrimage would deepen their faith and urged people to pray for them during their journey.
Some of the pilgrims, including Tumwesigye Benon from Rukondo parish, Annah Kyapaire from Bwanga Archdeaconry, and 16-year-olds Miracle Akatwijuka and Derick Tushabe, shared their reasons for embarking on the pilgrimage, citing blessings from God and personal intentions such as seeking healing.
