Stakeholders within Kisoro District’s tourism sector are strongly advocating for the transformation and renaming of Nyakabande Aerodrome to Gorilla Airport Kisoro. Louis Turyagyenda Bishubeho, the chairperson of the tourism committee in Kisoro District Council, argues that this change is warranted due to the district’s prominent Gorilla National Parks: Mgahinga and Bwindi. Bishubeho emphasizes that the majority of flights landing at Nyakabande Aerodrome are driven by the district’s diverse tourism offerings.

Expressing concern, Richard Munezero, the tourism officer for Kisoro District, has highlighted the urgent need to address the current state of Nyakabande Aerodrome. He worries that its inadequate condition might deter tourists from choosing Nyakabande as their landing destination, potentially leading them to opt for neighboring Rwanda as the peak season approaches, which could adversely affect revenue generation.

To address these concerns, Abel Bizimana, the Kisoro District LCV, is actively collaborating with the Ministry of Works and Transport to lead the upgrade and renaming efforts for Nyakabande Aerodrome to Gorilla Airport Kisoro.
