Authorities in Buhunga sub-county, Rukungiri district, are struggling to address a surge in security issues, particularly the theft of coffee and goats.
During a security meeting held yesterday at Omukikunika Trading Center, residents of Kyaruyenje parish expressed concerns over the increase in theft coinciding with the coffee harvesting season. Edward Kinyata, a local resident, noted that thieves have been sneaking into gardens to steal coffee beans directly from the trees, resulting in significant losses for farmers.
Posiano Twinomugisha, the LC1 chairperson, acknowledged the ongoing struggle to curb theft in the area and emphasized the need for a security meeting with other authorities to devise effective strategies.
Christopher Mugabiirwe, the Officer in Charge at Buhunga police post, urged residents to remain vigilant and protect their property, as thieves are active throughout the sub-county. He committed to working with village leaders to conduct patrols and apprehend those responsible for the thefts.
Benon Mugisha Aunt, the Buhunga sub-county chairperson, confirmed that the issue of coffee and goat theft is widespread across the sub-county. He assured residents that the authorities are taking all necessary measures to address and resolve the problem.
