Police in Kisoro are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and subsequent death of 48-year-old Naomi Nyirambonigaba, a resident of Kagano cell in Kanaba sub-county, Kisoro district.
The incident reportedly occurred on November 18, 2023, around 14:30 hours during the burial ceremony of an individual identified only as Jonas from Gisasa village in Kanaba sub-county. As mourners were giving speeches, some individuals implicated Nyirambonigaba Naomi and others in the death of the deceased, attributing it to witchcraft. Allegedly, this led to a violent assault on Nyirambonigaba, resulting in her death. Other potential victims managed to escape the attack.
The motive behind the murder appears to be suspicion of witchcraft. In response to a public tip, the police opened a murder case and dispatched a team of homicide detectives, along with the Scenes of Crime Officers (SOCO) from Kisoro, to assess, analyze, and document the crime scene. Statements from relevant witnesses were collected, and the body of the deceased was transported to Kisoro hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
To aid in the investigation, four suspects have been arrested. The police have initiated inquiries into the matter as they work to gather more information and establish the facts surrounding the tragic incident.
