Tensions are escalating in Byaruganbwa village, Buhunga subcounty, Rukungiri district, where more than 30 households are gripped with fear following the overturning of a wetland, suspected to be a result of a potential tornado.

According to Mr. Ivan Kusingura, the chairperson of Lc1, recounting the incident to our reporter, the disaster unfolded on Sunday morning when the entire land was washed away, and the wetland was inundated with water.

Expressing concern for the safety of residents, Ivan highlighted that the upheaval has not only instilled fear in the community but also jeopardized their livelihoods, as a substantial portion of their crops was swept away.

Ivan recalled a similar event years ago, leading to the displacement of several individuals. Urging the intervention of the technical team and relevant authorities, he emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent further, potentially more hazardous, consequences.

Among the distressed residents, Yosia Tindifa and Tubyamureeba Caleb revealed their apprehension, stating that the crisis on Sunday night, marked by severe landslides in Byaruganbwa village, has left them fearing for their lives. The heavy downpour resulted in the complete erosion of their land, leaving them with no crops and depriving their animals of grazing pastures situated in the affected wetland.

Residents conveyed that this destructive event is the second of its magnitude they have experienced in over a decade, highlighting the urgency for a visit from a technical team to assess the situation and provide necessary assistance. The affected community members emphasize that their peace of mind hinges on the prompt response and intervention of the technical team in the area.
