Rukungiri District is gearing up to observe its 61st independence celebration, albeit belatedly, on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at the Buyanja Town Council playground. Geoffrey Kyomukama, the District Chairperson, has revealed that the Minister of Security, Honorable Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, is expected to grace the occasion as the Guest of Honor, alongside members of Parliament from Rukungiri district.
The decision to hold delayed celebrations is attributed to the opportunity it provides for those who couldn’t attend the official celebration in Kitgumu district, located in the Acholi sub-region of Northern Uganda, to express their joy for Uganda’s 61st independence.
Kyomukama has called upon individuals, including political, religious, and opinion leaders, to rally their communities to participate from all sub-counties. He emphasized that extensive preparations are underway, involving various meetings, to ensure the success of the event.
Steven Nsubunga Bewayo, the Resident District Commissioner of Rukungiri, stated that the belated independence celebrations will adhere to the national theme of “sustaining a united and progressive nation, taking charge of our future as a free nation.” The commemoration is scheduled to commence at 9:00 am.
