The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) has urged all district production; natural resource and environment officers to always provide timely weather advisory information to farmers and the general public as the only way to avert natural disasters.
According to George William Omon who represented the executive director Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA), the district production and natural resource officers have sole responsibility of sharing advisory weather forecasts to reach the end users within the areas of jurisdiction.
Omon made remarks on Friday during the closure of a two day first Western Uganda Sub National Climate Outlook Forum for September to October 2022 season/ training of trainer (ToT) at Hotel Triangle Mbarara City which attracted chief administrative officers, district production, Natural resource officers, farmers groups and media within the districts of western Uganda.
He explained that floods and landslides in the districts of Bundibugyo,Kisoro and Kasese would not have happened if the district technical staff advised the public accordingly through the media.
Dr Anthony Kagoro, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative hailed UNMA for collaborating with FAO and WFP to organize the first of its kind Western Uganda Sub National Climate outlook training and asked the participants to ensure that the weather/climate information reaches at the grass root level.
Dr Nancy Jawawa the representative of World Food Program (WFP) pledges total support towards such training in the country.
The district Chairpersons including Aaron Turiho of Isingiro, Byamukama John Kisoke of Kyegegwa and Joseph Karungi of Kamwenge appealed to the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) and implementing partners decentralize the trainings for easy information sharing to the communities.
The two day training was under the theme “managing climate risks for resilience” organized by Uganda National Meteorological Authority in collaboration with World Food Program and Food and Agriculture Organization.
