Wazakendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO), the primary savings and credit institution for the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), recently donated a wheelchair to a one-year-and-three-month-old child to aid in her mobility as she grows.
Brig. Gen. Muhanguzi Paul, the Second Division Commander of UPDF stationed in Makenke Mbarara, presided over the donation ceremony at the UPDF Second Division headquarters. The event took place after the monthly open community meeting for sharing issues in the barracks on the first Monday of the month, attended by UPDF soldiers.
Brig. Gen. Muhanguzi highlighted that the SACCO annually receives dividends and generates income from its investments, contributing to community welfare as part of its corporate social responsibility. The wheelchair donation was made in response to a request from the mother, Lanse Corp. Agaba Baker, who had sought assistance through medical channels. Medical workers confirmed the need for a wheelchair for her one-year-and-three-month-old daughter, Atim Abigail, as the family couldn’t afford to purchase one.
UPDF, through Wazakendo SACCO, approved the request to support Lanse Corp. Agaba Baker and her daughter. Brig. Gen. Muhanguzi expressed gratitude to Wazalendo SACCO for not only providing loans to its members but also going the extra mile to assist those in need.
Maj Brian Okuta, the Manager of Wazakendo SACCO Mbarara branch, emphasized that the wheelchair donation aligns with the cooperative’s seventh principle of corporate social responsibility. The recipient, Lanse Corp. Agaba Baker, is a plumber serving in the Second Engineering Regiment at Makenke.
Lanse Corp. Agaba Baker shared her journey, mentioning that she received proper antenatal care and ultrasound scans, but after delivery, her daughter was diagnosed with spinal bifida and hydrocephalus. She expressed gratitude for UPDF, through Wazalendo Sacco, providing a wheelchair to enhance the mobility of her beloved daughter, Atim Abigail.
