The entire community and authorities at Karoli Lwanga Hospital in Nyakibale were left in shock on Monday when a woman attempted to abduct a one-week-old baby from the maternity ward.
The incident occurred around 2:00 pm when Mercy Turyaheebwa, a resident of Kyabahanga in Bwambara sub-county, Rukungiri district, briefly left her baby in the ward where she had been staying. Upon returning, she found the suspect, Jackline Natukunda, attempting to take her baby.
Turyahebwa, who recently gave birth and was at the facility settling her bills before going home, spoke to our reporter about the incident.
Natukunda, the daughter of Kanyaruju and a resident of Kyamakanda Buyanja, claimed it was not her intention to steal the baby, insisting that she was merely holding the child.
Catherine Ampumuza, the in-charge of the maternity ward at Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale, confirmed the incident. She stated that Natukunda had sneaked into the ward where Turyaheebwa was staying. Natukunda had been in a separate ward, preparing to leave the hospital, providing an opportunity for the suspect to attempt the abduction.
According to Catherine Ampumuza, such an incident has never occurred at Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale before.
The Rukungiri CPS authorities were informed, leading to the arrest of Natukunda, who was then taken to the police for questioning.
